Poll: Is $21,000 on Office Furniture Too Much?
The Sacramento County Executive has spent $21,000 on office furniture so far.
The new Sacramento County Executive has been busy redecorating.
Brad Hudson, who was recently recruited from Riverside, has spent $21,000 on furniture at his county office.
The Sacramento Bee reports his purchases have included a $7,300 desk, a few tables, conference chairs and "linen wall coverings."
Hudson defended the spending, saying he wanted to create an "open-door" environment.
"I wanted something that was appropriate for the work that we do," Hudson told the Bee. "It's not extravagant. I just want people to feel like they can come in."
Others the Bee spoke with were less supportive of the purchases. Sacramento County, which has been hammered by budget cuts in recent years, may not be making the best choice by spending this money, a past president of the local chapter of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees told the Bee.
Fair Oaks, what do you think of these expenses? Is it a good way to create an open-door policy for the new executive, or is it a waste of cash in tight economic times? Vote in our poll below and leave a comment with your thoughts.

Tell the person who works for Sacramento County and got laid off that they should feel free to use this open door policy.

This sounds all too familiar...
Fletcher asks why CA is spending $7000 on desks while schools and public safety are being cut?

There are plenty of surplus desks in government offices and warehouses so $7,000 for his desk is way over the top even for a new one. Officials are not listening to the people and this is a good example. This expediture does not create an open door policy. Only a person can create that and it is obvious he has no idea how to do it if he is spending this kind of tax payer money just to make himself feel important. Maybe the people should be raising havoc with their supervisors and those that hired him while keeping in mind they did the hiring.

This is a poor first step, given the economic situation and our county's severe revenue shortage. The County Executive receives a very generous pension from Riverside and a generous salary from Sacramento and would do well to be mindful of the economic hardship that many citizens are presently enduring.
